General Manager, Pacific Plug & Liner

Pacific Plug & Liner (PP&L), a division of Smith Gardens, Inc. is looking for a new General Manager.  PP&L is a leading perennial young plant operation with approximately 300,000 sq. ft. dedicated to growing consistent and superior quality product.  PP&L employs about 120 people on peak and is located in the beautiful Monterey Bay area with a climate ideal for perennial plant production.

The General Manager is responsible for the development and execution of the division’s strategic plans and has full profit and loss accountability. The GM is tasked with driving business growth, and ongoing development of best practices to increase efficiencies.  Success is measured by continual development of PP&L’s processes and teams - fostering a Great Place to Work - and leading to sales growth and profit improvement.


·        Development and execution of strategic direction in collaboration with Company leadership team

o   Program development

o   Budget development

o   New business development

·        Promotion of a team approach, assuring that PP&L is a great place to work

·        Leadership development, individual mentorship and coaching of 8 direct reports

·        Maintains thorough understanding of industry and competitive young plants market

·        Production of quality plant material, consistent with customer expectations

·        Designing and implementing processes, technology solutions and techniques to improve productivity and quality

·        Lead departments in best practice management and innovation in each of these areas:

o   Continuous improvement and standard work

o   Supervisory development, training and succession planning

o   Safety/Compliance

o   Labor efficiency

o   Equipment/Technology use and innovation

·        Operate with high integrity, adhering to Company standards and values

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

·        Strong leadership and interpersonal skills

·        Natural team building skills

·        Ability to communicate effectively

·        Positive attitude and work ethic

·        Comprehensive industry knowledge (evolving products, services, etc.)

·        Proficient in industry production/sales ERP system

·        Proficient in MS Office


·        Bachelor’s degree in business administration, horticulture or related field preferred

·        Minimum 10 years of progressive horticulture industry experience, young plants experience preferred

·        Excellent reputation in the industry

·        10 years management experience

Key Performance Indicators:

·        Sales growth of 10% annually

·        Customer satisfaction through quality and order fulfillment above 95%

·        Continual mentorship/leadership indicated by staff who are motivated and reaching their potential

·        Effective Continuous Improvement (Lean) process management that leads to higher quality plants, efficiency and cost reductions

·        Profit improvement
